We compared burial practices in Atlit-Yam to other Pre-Pottery Neolithic sites in the Southern Levant. The following parameters were examined: primary versus secondary burial, group versus individual burial, burial position, skull treatment and presence of burial goods. Our study revealed both similarities and some differences in burial type, possibly related to socio-economic diversity between sites. We found that at Atlit-Yam there is a higher percentage of primary burials compared to PPNC ‘Ain Ghazal where many of the dead were buried in secondary burials. This may relate to the practice of seasonal transhumance at ‘Ain Ghazal, with the dead being brought back to be buried at the settlement. Moreover, at Atlit-Yam the diversity of burial goods is higher and is often gender-related. During the subsequent Pottery Neolithic period, separate and organized burial grounds with stone-built graves emerged, as demonstrated at the inundated Wadi Rabah settlement of Neve Yam.

摘要
