This chapter outlines the physical setting, geology and paleogeography of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic C site of Atlit-Yam, the Atlit North Bay and the coastal area south and north of Atlit-Yam. The history of surveys and excavations carried out at the site, since its discovery in 1984, is described. Additionally, the characteristics of the Late Pottery Neolithic sites located in Atlit North Bay as well as underwater and coastal archaeological relics dating to later periods, that are found in, and adjacent to, the Atlit bays, are summarized.
