Introduction: Neglect, in Other Words
摘要
Perhaps his most famous story, Walser’s ‘The Walk’Walser, Robert, major works by\:‘The Walk’ not only goes round in circles but renders the walker unaccountable, unable to be pinned down. He loops around Biel’s Zentralplatz, visiting on his travels a bookseller, a bank, the post office, the Commission for Revenues, and a tailor’s shop, as well as having luncheon with Frau Aebi, whose hospitality extends to the brutal force-feeding of her guest. He also encounters an apparently bereft giant, Tomzack, on the fringes of the city. There is a noticeable theme running through all the walker’s dealings, which has a bearing not least upon the capitalistcapitalism, commercial and consumeristconsumerismeconomicseconomics of the early twentieth century but also concerns the (undoubtedly related) question of writing itself.
