This chapter analyzes the transformation of youth political engagement in established democracies, marked by declining electoral participation alongside growth in non-institutional activism. Drawing on comparative data from the European Social Survey and the World Values Survey, the analysis shows that young people remain politically active through petitions, protests, and digital participation, even as they disengage from formal politics. The chapter advances a conceptualization of “young cosmopolitans” and highlights the emerging youth backlash against establishment politics amid post-2008 austerity and the cost-of-living crises of the 2020s.

摘要

This chapter analyzes the transformation of youth political engagement in established democracies, marked by declining electoral participation alongside growth in non-institutional activism. Drawing on comparative data from the European Social Survey and the World Values Survey, the analysis shows that young people remain politically active through petitions, protests, and digital participation, even as they disengage from formal politics. The chapter advances a conceptualization of “young cosmopolitans” and highlights the emerging youth backlash against establishment politics amid post-2008 austerity and the cost-of-living crises of the 2020s.
