Digital Public Infrastructure for Our New Era
摘要
The new global era offers springboards to development with the promise of digital technologies and recent advancements in artificial intelligence. Yet, it also portends intensifying strains on labor, resources, and trade, along with more frequent and intense shocks buffeting economies. In this context, digital public infrastructure takes on vital importance by enabling seamless interactions between individuals and institutions. Properly architected, it can foster productivity, resilience, and widespread progress. Yet, like many technologies, it can also be deployed for undesirable purposes by governments, institutions, or individuals. One prerequisite to its success cannot be overemphasized: a vibrant market of users who see value in the specific use cases that a robust digital highway enables. This chapter outlines the relevance of digital public infrastructure in this age of era-defining disruptions that give particular use cases even greater significance, including some that can advance the world toward crucial Sustainable Development Goals.
