The production and marketing of novel seaweed products in the United States and Canada for human, animal, and plant applications has increased in the past decade. Companies are looking to utilize domestic supply—e.g., seaweed farms—as a sustainable source of high-value raw material for bioproduct manufacture. Adherence to historical regulatory compliance frameworks can be difficult as new product types continue to be identified. There is little guidance on seaweed-specific regulatory requirements in North America beyond certain niche applications (dried whole plants, fertilizer, and animal feed). Consumers expect that seaweed products manufactured in the United States and Canada should at a minimum meet the regulations defined by their application—human, animal, or plant—and provide nutritional or health benefits (or both) consistent with product claims. This chapter discusses the relevant sections of existing guidelines for producers and regulators to be familiar with when determining new product innovation strategies or evaluating product compliance.

摘要
