Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious adverse event of total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Even with contemporary treatments, failure rates are unacceptably elevated with a 5-year mortality rate of 26%. PJIs caused by Gram-negative bacteria are more frequent in individuals with hepatitis than in individuals without hepatitis. The PJI-TNM (T = tissue and implant conditions, N = nonhuman cells (bacteria and fungi), M = morbidity of the patient) classification system can be applied with significant inter- and intraobserver reliability. While further research is needed to formulate a precise protocol for the changing of gloves during TJA, it might be beneficial to carry out a thorough irrigation of the joint and change of the gloves immediately following arthrotomy.
