How Can Educators in Secular Public Schools Address Religious Bullying? A Step-by-Step Discussion on Using Religious Literacy
摘要
Local, national, and global affairs can impact relationships in a school. Using the war that began on 7 October 2023 between Israel and Hamas as an example, this chapter explores how a stark increase in religious discrimination, such as antisemitism and Islamophobia, in public spaces can impact student relationships. In particular, this chapter discusses the challenges of religious bullying—a specific form of religious discrimination—in secular public schools, and the potential harms of its long-term impact for the parties involved, witnesses, and the public. As one of many important solutions, religious literacy is introduced step-by-step in relation to the war to guide readers in an analysis that could support them in preventing and addressing religious bullying. Though 7 October is presented as a case study, the guidance is relevant for educators, policy makers, researchers, and the public in other unforeseeable conflicts too.
