The (D)evolution of Religion in Public Schools in Quebec
摘要
Religion has become taboo in Quebec in recent years, and particularly, in the context of public education. This chapter seeks to investigate the shift that has occurred in the last decade in Quebec, drawing on two Supreme Court of Canada cases which challenged the constitutionality of the (then) mandatory ethics and religious culture (ERC) programme, coupled with the recent and controversial Act respecting the laicity of the State, which further curtails the place of religion in the public educational setting. This chapter argues that while “religion” has been stripped from its historic perch in public education, seminal questions need to be asked about how “secularism” is to animate the educational system in Quebec, and what, if anything, is lost with this transformation.
