In what appears to be the first use in print of English Galois group, Cole (1887, p. 58) recalled a definition given by Klein in lectures:“The Galois group of an equation is the group of permutations of its roots which possesses the two properties–1st, that all corresponding rational functions of the roots are rationally known, and 2d [sic] that it is the equation group for which this is true”.
