Writing Gender, Writing Sex: Ideas and Approaches
摘要
This chapter explores the connection between empathy, sex and poetry, emphasising the role that empathetic engagement plays in both the creation and interpretation of poetic works. It discusses the way sexual desire, eroticism and intimacy in poetry intersect with broader societal constructs of gender, race and class. This chapter posits that these intersections illuminate the need for an empathetic approach to understanding and writing poetic texts about sex. It argues that empathy is not merely a backdrop but an important mechanism that facilitates deeper connections between the poet and the reader, enriching the reading experience and enhancing the emotional resonance of the work. By foregrounding empathy in the study and teaching of poetry about sex, this research advocates for a more inclusive and nuanced approach that recognises the importance of fostering understanding and compassion within creative expressions.
