The Use of Geosynthetic Materials for Irrigation Canals: Applications and Benefits for Water Loss Reduction

Reducing water losses in irrigation canal networks is a significant concern for land reclamation specialists focused on the sustainable management of water resources, particularly given the climate changes that have led to a reduction in precipitation levels and extended drought periods. This article aims to examine the use of geosynthetic materials as modern solutions for waterproofing water intake and distribution channels, in comparison to traditional waterproofing methods, such as concrete slabs—initially adopted during the design and construction phases of existing irrigation canals. These traditional methods no longer provide reliable operational safety due to degradation caused by freeze-thaw cycles. The use of geosynthetic materials offers several advantages, including reduced weight, flexibility, and ease of installation, especially in locations with difficult access, providing superior efficiency in terms of both cost and time. Unlike traditional methods, which often require complex equipment and prolonged construction times, geosynthetics can be applied with high productivity, using minimal labor and equipment, thus contributing to more sustainable management of natural resources. This paper presents both new technologies and traditional waterproofing solutions, evaluating not only the reduction in water infiltration but also any potential limitations. Through the examination of case studies, the paper highlights the importance of adopting geosynthetics as a solution for lining canals in irrigation systems as a viable alternative for the efficient management of water resources in agriculture.
