This chapter introduces the concept of “semiotics”, as a general paradigm, and in relation to its possible application to music. It defines the field, lists the most important actions, processes, functions and sensory modes implied in semiosis; outlines the notions of codes, text and sign, presenting the main general theories and models in the field.
