This chapter provides a history of Black-led demands for reparations. I underline the “alternate logics” that they emphasize, logics that draw on traditional African principles of interdependence, shared resources, cooperative economics, and collective responsibility. What are Black members of these movements demanding from white people? How might meeting these demands spell freedom not only for African Americans but for white people, as well? Abolitionist reparations can create worlds we deeply desire but have too often lost any hope for.

摘要

This chapter provides a history of Black-led demands for reparations. I underline the “alternate logics” that they emphasize, logics that draw on traditional African principles of interdependence, shared resources, cooperative economics, and collective responsibility. What are Black members of these movements demanding from white people? How might meeting these demands spell freedom not only for African Americans but for white people, as well? Abolitionist reparations can create worlds we deeply desire but have too often lost any hope for.
