Advancing Architectural Visualization: Boosting Scale and Reality with Augmented Reality

Visualization has always been essential in architecture, evolving from pen and paper drafts to digital renderings that closely mirror reality. As technology advances, augmented reality offers a new perspective for immersive visualization. This allows architects to place virtual models directly within the desired real-world environment. By integrating augmented reality, designers can address key challenges of reality and scale. Reality refers to how tangible a design feels. Scale refers to how accurately the user perceives the size and mass of the design. By leveraging game engines alongside imported models, augmented reality can simulate realtime lighting and occlusion effects in real space, addressing these challenges. To explore these benefits, an iPhone application was developed to place a pavilion within a local park, offering a direct comparison between augmented reality and traditional 3D models. The results indicated that augmented reality fosters a more genuine understanding of spatial relationships, aiding architects, designers, and users to experience designs more intuitively. This approach holds significant promises for transforming architectural visualization, providing a toolset that bridges the gap between digital concepts and real-world contexts to better inform design decision-making.
