African countries are taking steps in carving out their position as competitors in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The mantra ‘AI made in Africa for Africa’ is guiding some Africans to take decisive actions to strategically position themselves as AI sovereigns with the authority to create enabling environments which promote local innovations and the use of AI tools to develop home-grown solutions, exercise control over actors in the African AI and data markets, and equipping citizens with the requisite AI digital skills. This paper assesses the Key AI Sovereignty Enablers (KASE) framework proposed by Belli within the South African context. The paper provides recommendations on the way forward reading KASE in South Africa.
