Deforestation is an urgent environmental problem facing our times. It leads to biodiversity loss, disruption of the water cycle and intensification of climate change, affecting the livelihoods of millions of forest-dependent people. In addition, it exacerbates socioeconomic inequalities, especially in developmental regions, and thus undermines progress toward achieving the sustainable development goals. To reduce deforestation as soon as possible, environmental education (EE) receives increasing attention worldwide. This chapter, based on a comparative analysis of Japan and India, concretely examines the function of EE in combating deforestation. Despite their different socioeconomic contexts, both countries have a strong commitment to forest protection. By examining education initiatives, guidelines and strategies for commitment in municipalities in both countries, the study emphasizes how EE improves awareness, promotes sustainable practices and enables municipalities to protect forest resources. Case studies and data analysis show that EE is a powerful instrument that can significantly reduce forest loss in combination with robust policy’s support and active community participation, although education alone cannot stop deforestation. The results suggest that an integrated approach that uses education as a cornerstone is crucial for sustainable forest management in India, Japan, and beyond.
