Basic phenomena such as EMI, RFI, and ESD are explained as well as a very brief history of when and why EMC started. Examples of EMI incidents in the real world due to a lack of EMC design and proper use of EMC standards are given especially for the 1970s to 1990s, with a short list of consequences, from mere nuisances to catastrophies with fatal issues. The source–victim concept is discussed with the basic breakdown of EMC into conducted emission (CE), radiated emission (RE), conducted susceptibility (CS), and radiated susceptibility (RS). Difference between susceptibility and immunity is described and practical EMC units are presented. Illustration of time-to-frequency conversions is a key part of the sub-section titled “Why Frequency Domain?”.
