Given the importance of English as the global lingua franca, especially within the industry, proficiency in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is crucial in the professional environment. Thus, the challenges posed to ESP teachers are manifold, including the innovative pedagogical options to address the relationships between language, function and context, as well as to foster the development of transversal competences, such as intercultural communication, collaboration and digital competences. This paper outlines the design of a pedagogical strategy for an ESP course offered by a Portuguese Higher Education institution, focusing on enhancing (international) collaboration. By integrating hybrid teaching and learning with activities based on student-generated quizzes and a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project, the strategy seeks to align with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles by providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression. In terms of evaluation, feedback from the students’ final short report indicates that the majority encountered challenges with time management, highlighting a need for improvement in future editions. However, the development of (international) teamwork and communication competences was perceived as a strength, contributing to their ability to work effectively in diverse, global contexts in the future.
