A concept map is a schematic systematization of a concept and can be a powerful tool to inspire student learning. In this study, we present the tasks developed by students during the first semester of 2020/2021, a period marked by the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic. Despite the difficulties of distance learning and the need for innovative teaching strategies, the students demonstrated resilience and engagement in the online classes of the Probability and Statistics Course at a North Eastern Portuguese University. This work presents frames and analyzes one concept map task used in the Probability and Statistics Course to introduce it, including a critical thinking perspective. The results revealed that the students overrated the proposed concept map and could use the suggested assessment grid to examine the concept map but needed more training to develop their skills. Despite the lack of time in the 1st class, students liked having a different class and viewed it as active. The novel assessment items motivated students to follow the classes and adhere to the continuous assessment mode. This task allowed students to enhance their work in an online classroom.
