Learning to play the guitar presents significant challenges for beginners, primarily due to complex chord fingerings and the repetitive nature of practice required for skill development. To address these motivational barriers, we developed Guitar Clicker, a gamified system that enhances motivation through structured goal setting and reward-based mechanics. Our approach incorporates core elements from clicker games—a genre where players earn points through simple interactions that can be invested to improve point acquisition efficiency. In Guitar Clicker, players earn performance points by strumming a guitar, which can then be used to “level up” their musical instrument, thereby increasing the efficiency of point acquisition. This system creates a positive feedback loop to encourage consistent guitar practice while providing a sense of progress through point accumulation and achievement milestones. To evaluate the system’s effectiveness, we conducted a nine-day user study with six beginner guitarists. Results indicate that the gamification elements, particularly the points system, increased enjoyment and sustained motivation during practice sessions. These findings suggest that integrating game-based incentive structures into musical instrument practice may offer a promising approach to addressing common motivational challenges faced by novice learners.
