Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies: Investigating Individuals’ Ability to Identify Deepfake Media
摘要
In an era characterised by rapid and continuous evolution of technology, Artificial Intelligence takes the lead. Deepfakes are just one emerging technology that makes use of AI and Deep Learning. This incredibly realistic synthetic media threatens the realm of cybersecurity by degrading information integrity, as deepfakes pose a multi-faceted threat to individuals, businesses, and governments. They can be used maliciously, particularly in social engineering, phishing attacks, and political discourse, with the potential to defraud people, defame them and erode their trust in governments. This study investigates the human ability to detect deepfakes, with a focus on identifying the characteristics that influence detection ability. This mixed methods study conducted deepfake detection experiments with 31 participants following qualitative interviews. The research identified deepfake awareness as the main contributing factor to increased deepfake detection ability. Individuals and organisations should increase deepfake awareness to fortify their human defences against deepfake phishing attacks.
