Lignocellulosic biomass is an important material considered for integration into the energy matrix of all countries, to be used as an alternative, to some degree, to fuels produced from fossil sources, contributing to the decrease in atmospheric CO₂ accumulation. Despite its evident importance in helping reduce global warming, the large variation in its composition and structure requires a sequence of steps to define its appropriate application. This includes studies to precisely determine its qualitative and quantitative composition and to identify the nature of its main components—carbon, nitrogen, or other essential elements, including ash. Considering the structure of its constituent molecules, it is necessary to define an appropriate pretreatment to disrupt the main structure and recover constituent fractions to be used in processes that produce new, high-value-added molecules. This chapter presents and discusses some important points to be considered.
