How to Ruin Your Clients: Mindfulness as Cruelty
摘要
In How to Ruin Your Clients: Mindfulness Meditation as Cruelty, I critique the integration of mindfulness meditation into modern therapeutic practices, arguing that its current form operates as a tool to uphold neoliberal capitalism. I suggest that, rather than fostering revolutionary change, mindfulness has been co-opted to boost productivity, reduce stress, and maintain the status quo. However, I believe that mindfulness holds an inherent potential for radical transformation if practitioners embrace disenchantment—a concept rooted in Buddhist traditions. By cultivating disenchantment, mindfulness could disrupt clients’ adaptation to capitalist ideology, leading to a form of therapeutic “cruelty” that awakens clients to the harsh realities of existence and liberates them from the constraints of capitalist subjectivity. Ultimately, I propose that such an approach could serve the goals of a revolutionary psychology.
