The chapter summarizes the findings of this book. It overviews the many profound social changes that have been brought about by the internet which range from shifts in patterns of social behavior to increasing polarization, declining trust in institutions, downturns in mental health, declines in traditional reading, to the rise of the influencer phenomenon and state and corporate tech-led surveillance. The chapter reflects on the broader implications of these trends. In doing so, emphasis is placed on acknowledging the ongoing interplay between human agency and digital structures and the relative contingency with which current causal outcomes should be viewed. Giddens pointed toward the importance of considering the non-universal nature of social scientific generalizations as there is variability in how actors interpret and apply their knowledge in different situations, which in turn entails that situational nuances impact both the applicability and accuracy of social scientific theories. The potential consequences of digital technologies continuing along their current, fluid yet coercive paths are indeed serious. However, as highlighted throughout this book, there remain significant opportunities for individual agency to influence and reshape structures and systems.
