Going Outside
摘要
This chapter introduces the layout of this book. The rise of internet technologies has fundamentally transformed social behavior and societal structures in the United States. Specifically, the advent of the internet and subsequent digital technologies have shifted many different facets of behavior that once took place through physical interactions to predominantly online virtual engagements. This chapter presents readers with an introductory explanation of some of these profound social changes brought about by the internet and likewise sets the stage for a deeper exploration of the internet’s widespread impact on daily life. It also introduces the conceptual basis of structuration theory, which will be used throughout the book to analyze the interplay between digital structures and human agency. It argues that this duality is central to understanding the transformative impact that the internet has had (and will continue to have) on society.
