In 2021, the EU Commission presented a new trade policy strategy, entitled “An Open, Sustainable and Assertive Trade Policy” in order to support the EU’s Open Strategic Autonomy (OSA). OSA is intended to enhance the EU’s ability to act in a way that reflects its strategic interests and values, particularly at the international level. This Chapter briefly explains why the vague OSA leitmotif has become a ubiquitous concept in EU affairs, reflecting in particular the erosion of multilateralism promoted by the “West” and the realisation that trade and energy policies are increasingly being “weaponised”.
