Western scholarship on the lived experiences of female victims of sexual assault and emotional abuse is extensive. Undoubtedly, public justice campaigns such as the “Me Too” movement which started in early 2000s have played a part in driving contemporary research on sexual violence matters. In the developing south, sexual assault and emotional abuse are also prevalent. However, research into the lived experiences of women is limited. The same is also true for Guyana. Be that as it may, Guyana has a robust legislative framework to address matters related to sexual assault albeit it neglects emotional abuse and trauma which are corollaries. This paper proposes to follow a multiple case study approach by focusing on the experiences of three survivors of sexual assault in Guyana with a view towards examining their lived experiences; understanding the long-term implications for their relationships and family life; and ascertaining the effectiveness and efficacy of support systems. This exercise is useful in identifying gaps in the legislative framework in responding to the psychological and other needs of victims of sexual assault and emotional abuse. The paper therefore makes necessary recommendations.
