The primary focus of this chapter is on understanding the barriers that impose limitations on the ability of persons with disabilities to participate in Guyanese society. It also considers the required policy adjustments that may help to facilitate improved participation of disabled persons. Theoretical insights are drawn primarily from critical disability theory, with limited reference to Amartya Sen’s capability approach in the discussions. The chapter employs a qualitative approach where data on the lived experiences of disabled persons are obtained through a focus group discussion with participants drawn from a disability association encompassing multiple types of disabilities. Additional data was gathered through supplementary interviews for further in-depth analysis and a review of secondary data. Five key themes were extracted from the discussions with participants, as key areas where the disabled community faces barriers to participating in society. These include: participation in social services; participation in commercial activities to access goods and services; labour market participation; participation in social and community life; and participation in public and political life. Enforcement of relevant disability legislation is a key issue that emanated from the discussion on factors that may be required to facilitate improved participation of disabled persons.
