As editors, we envisioned that academic and student readers alike will now have a sense and appreciation of the contemporary challenges facing Guyana. The issues of concern to social work and sociology presented here represent a microcosm of the phenomenon engaging our attention. Through this book, Guyana at a Crossroads: Diversity, Vulnerable Subgroups and the Promise of Development, we comprehensively explore key socio-economic and social issues confronting Guyana at this pivotal moment in its history. It argues that oil-driven growth will not translate into genuine progress unless it dismantles the structural barriers keeping large segments of the population on the margins. Guyana’s burgeoning oil and gas sector presents a significant opportunity for economic advancement.
