The world of sports is undergoing a rapid transformation, driven by the constant advancements in technology and Artificial Intelligence. From revolutionising training methodologies to enhancing fan engagement, AI is reshaping the landscape of athletic performance and spectator experience. This paper examines the wide impact of AI on the new generation of athletes and fans, exploring how these technologies are influencing their development, opportunities, and interactions with the world of sports. Key areas of focus include the emergence of AI-powered training systems, utilizing data analysis and virtual reality to help athletes enhance even the most minute details of their performance. Simultaneously, AI is transforming the fan experience, providing access to a wealth of information and immersive technologies that allow them to experience the games they love on a whole new level, creating a more engaging connection with their favourite sports and athletes. This paper will consider a number of case studies to evaluate the impact of AI-enhanced athlete training, with a particular focus on the Virtual Player Optimisation (VPO) project. The VPO project, uses AI-driven video analysis to create personalised and optimised VR training environments for handball athletes. Early testing of the VPO system has shown that athletes using the system can improve their performance by as much as 25%, highlighting the potential of AI to significantly accelerate athlete development. This exploration highlights the transformative power of AI in sports, suggesting a future where technology plays an increasingly integral role in shaping the next generation of athletes, pushing the boundaries of human potential and redefining the very nature of sporting competition and spectatorship.
