Half a Century of Evolution: The Shaping of Germanic Heroic Narratives in Mass Popular Culture
摘要
This chapter examines the changing depiction of Germanic heroic narratives in mass popular culture over the last fifty years. The discussion starts with the crucial significance of fantasy and historical fiction, highlighting Tolkien’s fundamental impact and the revival of medievalist writing in the late twentieth century. The examination encompasses film and television, emphasizing adaptations of Beowulf, the Nibelungenlied, and Norse sagas, particularly focusing on contemporary reinterpretations that amalgamate spectacle, historical fiction, and fantasy. Graphic novels and comics are analyzed as potent instruments for reinterpreting medieval mythology, particularly via adaptations of Beowulf and Marvel’s depiction of the god Thor. The chapter examines the impact of Germanic ancestry on heavy metal music, concentrating on themes of mythology, warfare, and identity, with subgenres highlighting Norse iconography and performance. It demonstrates how medieval themes have been consistently reconfigured to correspond with modern ideals, audiences, and entertainment modalities.
