Technologies today are having profound implications for how we labor and communicate: From app-based gig work to productivity trackers that monitor workers’ movements, technologies are creating more precarious and harried working conditions for millions of people around the world. Communication has likewise been disrupted: Smartphones and the internet connect billions of people to global information networks, while private tech companies exert monopoly control over these systems, blocking or restricting information that governments deem too dangerous and limiting the free exchange of ideas. As the labor process and communication power evolve, this chapter examines the material and cultural dimensions of class formation. Avoiding techno-utopian or deterministic analyses about the promise and perils of technology, it offers historical and critical analyses about the uneven power dynamics at the heart of technological change.
