Integrative, Complementary, and Alternative Therapies in Lung Cancer Care
摘要
Many cancer patients are interested in complementary and alternative therapies (CAM), therapies that have not been provided by mainstream Western medical care. The interest comes from unmet symptom needs, a desire for a gentler approach to health, or even promise of a cure for an incurable disease. Integrative oncology incorporates safe and beneficial complementary therapies supported by scientific evidence to reduce symptoms and improve physical and mental well-being. Patient navigators and allied health professionals are uniquely positioned to help patients on this topic—understanding their needs, setting realistic expectations, guiding patients toward helpful complementary therapies, and moving them away from alternative cancer therapies that lack evidence. In this chapter, we will discuss patients’ concerns at each stage of their cancer journey—at diagnosis, during active treatment, in survivorship, and with advanced disease with limited treatment options. We will present evidence of complementary therapies for specific symptoms, e.g., acupuncture for pain or mind–body practices for anxiety. We will also share our experience and tips on effectively conversing with patients in a patient-centered manner when they are interested in ineffective alternative therapies that would not deliver the promise.
