Artificial Intelligence and The Legal Field
摘要
This chapter focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential applications within the legal domain. It begins by outlining historical developments and data related to the early emergence of AI, followed by an examination of the current applications of intelligent systems in the legal sector. Both the advantages and disadvantages associated with these technologies will be explored. The second part of the chapter presents a specific application of AI in the legal field, particularly concerning the analysis of legal language. To this aim, an excerpt from a law report sourced from the CHELAR corpus is analysed using an AI-driven system. The final section examines the topic of automated translations and back-translations of another law report extracted from the CHELAR corpus. This chapter also explores gender bias in AI, particularly within legal contexts. It examines how these technologies may reinforce existing biases if not carefully designed and monitored. Specific examples of gendered language in legal texts are provided to show how AI can promote gender-neutral language practices. Furthermore, it considers the impact of biased AI outputs on gender equality in legal frameworks, emphasising the need for continuous oversight to ensure that AI supports gender neutrality in legal discourse.
