Since thunderstorms and lightning are the origin of most, if not all, ball lightning events, this chapter will take a closer look at the basic processes involved in a thunderstorm. Of the many phenomena associated with thunderstorms, I will explain the most important to establish a foundation for discussing the central problem of ball lightning research: the origin of these objects, their physical nature, and potential experiments.
