This chapter presents and analyses the museal conceptualization of the exhibition TO BE SEEN. queer lives 1900–1950, on display at the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism between 7 October 2022 and 21 May 2023, and for which the author was the lead curator. Linking a reading of queer history in the first half of the twentieth century from the perspective of the museum with the exhibition, the chapter shows how print media are repositories of memory and archives. Bringing together print media with contemporary art, this chapter reflects on how both complement each other while standing on their own. The chapter assesses the limits of archival material and in which ways they can trigger a reaction from visitors by focusing on marginalized histories and their place in museums. Reflecting on the reception of and reactions to the act of showing and the place of original magazines, the author wonders if queer historiographies are hindered by traditional forms of representation. Using the work of queer artists connecting print media with their art, the chapter suggests possible new forms of history writings using visual art and queer printed media.
