‘It’s Wonderful that We Again, Finally, Have a Magazine Made Just for Us’: Gay Magazines and the Re-establishment of a Queer Public Sphere in 1970s West Germany
摘要
This chapter evaluates the re-emergence of a queer public sphere in 1970s West Germany following a reform to the sodomy law in 1969, focusing, in particular, on two commercial gay titles: du&ich and him. The chapter pays close attention to the various components of these magazines, including their visual content, personals, and letters to the editor. These letters reveal how crucial the connectivity provided by these magazines was to their readers, even if editors did not always succeed in meeting their readers’ erotic, political, and emotional demands. The chapter also considers the exclusionary tendencies of the 1970s gay press, including the representation of lesbians, trans people, and Black Germans, as part of the editors’ and publicists’ attempts to police the boundaries of acceptable male homosexuality in the immediate aftermath of homosexual law reform.
