This chapter is an introduction to the book Strategies to Fight Online Health Misinformation: Health Information Quality Assurance, Digital Literacy and Fact-Checking. This chapter presents and analyzes the virtues and problems inherent to the “Network Society,” characterized by the pervasive presence of new information and communication technologies in the lives of each of us. It highlights the interface between this context and health. It discusses the concepts of “fake news” and “disinformation.” It analyzes the consequences and reactions to the information epidemic we live in (“Infodemic”), particularly in the context of COVID-19. This introduction presents, finally, the three chapters coming next in the book, where an analysis is made of alternatives to fight “misinformation,” namely: health information quality assurance, digital literacy, and fact-checking. As far as we see, these alternatives should be part of public policies meant to promote citizenship against disinformation.
