Seasickness has been reported as an issue affecting many offshore wind farm workers. As the number of offshore wind farms increases, the number of workers encountering provocative motion will similarly increase. Wind farm workers travel from shore to the wind farm using crew transfer vessels (CTV). On arrival, they transfer to the wind turbine. Once on the turbine, they carry out physically and cognitively strenuous work. Transferring to the turbine has been identified as being demanding and associated with safety incidents. Cases of seasickness rarely have the same temporal progression or symptomology. While nausea and vomiting are objective symptoms, there are subjective symptoms which frequently go unrecognised despite their impact on worker well-being. A distinction is sometimes made between feeling seasick - suffering subjective symptoms, and being seasick, vomiting. Using surveys, interviews and workplace observations, this study examines how social norms, company policies, coping strategies (e.g., medication use), and other factors influence the progression of seasickness and the workplace response to it. The aim is to understand how these elements shape the experience of seasickness within this occupational setting. Findings indicate that there is a reluctance for workers to report seasickness despite the work environment being open, and that company policies are significant in shaping worker attitudes to seasickness. This analysis highlights the complexities of managing seasickness in this workforce, underscoring the importance of recognising symptoms other than vomiting, and their impact on worker well-being, safety and performance.
