School psychologists must collaborate with students and their families to design, implement, and evaluate academic, behavioral, and mental health interventions. Students from linguistically diverse backgrounds and their families often need help communicating in English with school psychologists and other school personnel during those collaborations. However, significant shortages of bilingual school psychologists able to provide intervention services in the many languages other than English (LOTE) spoken by families and students from diverse language and immigrant backgrounds imply that school psychologists must work with interpreters to facilitate communication (NASP, 2023). Culturally responsive intervention planning and delivery involve engaging in an intentional process that approaches every problem-solving stage of intervention delivery by using effective communication strategies, including when working with interpreters. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss challenges and recommended practices when working with interpreters during intervention planning and implementation. Intervention delivery is situated within social justice and culturally responsive frameworks facilitated by interpreters.
