In the previous chapters, I have emphasized the powerful biological and societal determinisms that lead us to this paradoxical situation where awareness of the impending ecological disaster does not lead us to change our individual and collective behaviors. I wanted to show that we should not, however, conclude that this is a form of inevitability. I analyze the strong relationships between competition, inequality, and the destruction of the planet while showing that this disastrous triptych can be overcome. If it was put in place during the Neolithic revolution, humans are cognitively flexible enough to free themselves from the determinisms that have led them to the current crisis.
