The Boredom and Horror of Meaninglessness: The Ultimate Obstacle
摘要
Humans are not perfectly equipped to handle boredom and the absence of desire. When boredom and lack of desire take hold, it results in a state of psychological suffering that can lead to depression and acute anxiety. There are various ways to manage boredom and lack of desire, and the emergence of post-Paleolithic societies has played a fundamental role in this regard. These societies, by making inequality a norm, have made possible the ever-renewable desire for consumption and personal enrichment. Capitalism is very effective from this point of view, hence the difficulty we have in escaping it, even though we know its destructive dimension at the environmental level.
