Empuriabrava is a seaside resort situated on the Costa Brava, in Spain. It is a typical example of a tourist district that has developed into a distinct town, in which tourists have gradually become year-round residents, taking part fully in local life. However, most of the time, even though they are in Spain, these migrants live in relatively closed communities. These communities are defined mainly on linguistic grounds, with the most highly represented here being German and French. While these communities work together to oppose or communicate with the local Catalan nationalist council, they can be differentiated by their social practices, each one remaining within their culturally-defined social grouping. Throughout the social groupings there is an attachment to the place, encompassing both the town and individual neighborhoods. This is because, as is often the case, the living spaces are not just places the inhabitants are attached to, and with which they identify to varying degrees, but also a means of distinction, conveying social values and differentiations, and containing subtle hierarchies. Empuriabrava can thus be termed a tourist town, perceived as such from the outside, but it is also a juxtaposition of living spaces, the neighborhoods. The latter are the internal and external signs that serve to identify their inhabitants, showing that geographical proximity does not prevent social distance.
