This chapter explores Empathic Reflexivity, where researchers deliberately acknowledge their active participation in knowledge creation whilst working to attune to participants’ experiences. The approach emphasises understanding participants’ perspectives through insightful empathy, which draws on both affective empathy (purposefully sharing in another’s feelings whilst maintaining boundaries) and cognitive empathy (perceiving the meaning of another’s emotional experiences). Key strategies for Empathic Reflexivity include building rapport through time and proximity, engaging in perspective-taking and perspective-getting, and employing deep listening techniques. The chapter examines practical applications of Empathic Reflexivity across different research phases, from developing empathic research questions to conducting flexible interviews, arts-based data collection, and collaborative analysis that maintains closeness to participants’ experiences. Particular attention is given to managing dual researcher-therapist roles, navigating power dynamics, and maintaining ethical relationships. Empathy is paired with humility and an acknowledgement of differences to avoid oversimplification, while fostering compassionate and respectful engagement. The chapter addresses challenges in balancing closeness with critical distance, building empathic research teams, and inviting readers into empathic relationships with findings. Trustworthiness is established through demonstrating how researchers developed a deep understanding whilst critically evaluating their empathic processes.

摘要
