I have demonstrated here that if we re-imagine what we deem to be valuable about Higher Education, surely one of the key points of significance is the way that Humanities subjects can deepen people’s humanity and compassion. These are the bedrock upon which ethical awareness rests and are publically important. Our humanity improves the quality of scholarship through epistemic openness, belonging, and authentic engagement. It improves the quality of our institutions and, as I have shown, it can improve profitability (though what is value in our human lives should not be reduced to profit). We need now, more than ever, to use the skills that Humanities subjects offer in order to work together with other subjects to face the challenges of today’s world.
