This chapter discusses the emotion of anger in relation to Cotton Famine poetry that encompasses topics of political radicalism and international tension. The first section, “Angry Poetry in the Blackburn Times,” analyses the radical poetry published in that newspaper, which was a uniquely provocative publication in the Lancashire region during the Cotton Famine. The second section, “British Criticism of America,” looks at the wide variety of verse published in British newspapers that expressed anger directed towards either or both sides of the American Civil War. The third section, entitled “American Criticism of Britain” reverses this focus and provides interpretation of American newspaper poetry that criticised British neutrality and economic/diplomatic policy during the conflict.
