The prevalence of hardcopy document forgery, particularly in South Africa, raises significant concerns regarding the integrity and authentication of crucial documents such as academic records and identification. To combat this issue, it is essential to develop a robust verification solution that maintains the integrity of both hardcopy and digital documents. This study introduces a comprehensive approach that integrates multiple technologies, including Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for digitising documents, Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) for secure timestamping, and the InterPlanetary File Solution (IPFS) for off-chain storage. Additionally, the solution employs the W3C Verifiable Credential (VC) standard to ensure tamper-evident credentials and provides a user-friendly interface for document validation. Using these technologies, the proposed solution aims to improve document security and authenticity, thus addressing the challenges of forgery and strengthening trust in critical information in various sectors.
