In this chapter, we present a model for the description of the Laplace resonance, which is a special configuration in which the major satellites of Jupiter are found. Precisely, the resonance involves the Galilean satellites named Io, Europa, Ganymede and it implies that a suitable linear combination of the mean longitudes of the three satellites librates around \(\pi \) , with the consequence that they can never be in triple conjunction, which is the configuration in which the satellites feel the gravitational influence at the larger extent. We discuss also a dissipative contribution to the Laplace resonance due to the tidal torque.

摘要

In this chapter, we present a model for the description of the Laplace resonance, which is a special configuration in which the major satellites of Jupiter are found. Precisely, the resonance involves the Galilean satellites named Io, Europa, Ganymede and it implies that a suitable linear combination of the mean longitudes of the three satellites librates around \(\pi \) , with the consequence that they can never be in triple conjunction, which is the configuration in which the satellites feel the gravitational influence at the larger extent. We discuss also a dissipative contribution to the Laplace resonance due to the tidal torque.
