Layers of the Anthropocene: Occupation History of Rondônia
摘要
This chapter provides an overview of how the territory of Rondônia state in the Brazilian Amazon region was settled. The method is bibliographic research and satellite imagery analysis. This chapter is organised into sections that divide the historical period into three so-called Anthropocene layers: original layer, the first layer, and the second layer. It concludes that the history of occupation of the region has been marked by the exploitation of natural resources in different phases of the economy, the main one being the colonisation that began in the 1960s. Finally, the Rondônia region has been affected by large-scale deforestation and the exploitation of its natural resources, such as forestry, minerals, and the expansion of agriculture. The only remaining almost unaffected areas are protected forest areas and indigenous lands.
